Artist Statement
------------------------------
I am a processed based mixed media painter and I like to explore my work from start to finish through the various materials that I am using. I am totally addicted to textures and most times my starting point would be through found, organic materials. I also spend time to take endless closeup photos of interesting surfaces and textures when out walking in nature.
A broken off branch, a strange looking stone or a heavily cracked wall, all can lead to dozens of photo sketches that are then taken to the studio and processed further into works of art.
As a result then, my work is almost always heavily layered or textured. I am starting out on canvas, wood panel or paper. In combination with fabric, wood, paper and sometimes metal I will build up layers on my base. Those layers then get plastered over with a paste made with plaster of Paris, cement or wall plastering. A finished layer is then going to be marked with tools , scratched or broken up and painted and marked with different mediums with anything from pens to paints and pigments, only then to a add another layer on top of the next which again will get exposed in places to reveal what's underneath like pages in a book with hidden stories. It is a continuous process of building, defacing and rebuilding again and again. I like to search for something deeper in those layers. A glimpse of a memory, a connection, a dialogue with feelings and emotions. Or perhaps the meaning of the land and our core connection with our ancestors in left behind structures that have become a part of our landscape.
